Will I have to pay fees?

School Leavers under the age of 19 do not have to pay fees on any full time courses, though may have to pay for their second year if turning 19 during their studies.

If you’re aged 19 or over you might qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. It’s easy to apply for and you won’t have to pay anything back until you’re earning over £25,725 a year. Find more information on Advanced Learner Loans on our website.

If you are studying a part-time course and you receive one of the following benefits, or you depend financially on someone who does, you may be entitled to have your tuition fees waived:

  • Job Seeker's Allowance
  • Income Support

You will, however, have to pay any awarding body/assessment fees (unless you are on a first full level 2 course).

* If you are in receipt of Working Tax Credit or receive other allowances, you may be eligible to claim concessionary rates. If you are entitled to a fee concession you will be asked to provide proof of your entitlement.

It is essential that you inform us if your entitlement changes at any time during your course.

For any questions about fees, remissions and entitlements, please contact our helpful Enrolments Team on 01329 815 200.

English & Maths

Duration
1 year

Entry Requirements
You should have a good level of general arithmetic skills from everyday life and would be expected to complete an initial assessment prior to be offered at place.

Course Information
This course encourages students to develop competence with numbers, basic formulae and algebra, statistical diagrams and data pair graphs. You will find the course interesting and motivating by solving problems in everyday life. The course will build confidence in using maths for further studies and will embed transferable skills into the workplace. Students will have their achievement recognised as they earn a graded certificate. Students will become competent in the use of basic formulae and algebraic representation in spreadsheets, the use of statistical diagrams, and developing real-world mathematical understanding.

Assessment
Assessment is by exam which will be taken in the following June. You will also be assessed through a range of in-class activities and examinations. A detailed breakdown of the assessments will be given to you at your first class. Calculators are allowed.

Considerations
All students will require a pad of A4 wide-lined paper, a file to keep their work in, plastic wallets and dividers to keep their files organised. You should also bring pens and a highlighter pen to class. To cover the course in one year you will need a minimum of an extra hour independent study each week.

Progression

A functional skills qualification will enable you to acquire good levels of skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening that will apply to everyday life. Learners can use this qualification to progress on to Level 2 qualifications and GCSEs.

Entry into further training or employment will be much easier with a functional skills qualification. Levels 1 and 2 can be used to complete Apprenticeships.

Additional Information
Students aged 19 or over will be required to pay a refundable £50 deposit to enrol on this course, which will be returned upon successful completion.
